Hatebreed // Live @ House of Blues Houston // 7.10.26 CONCERT REVIEWS FEATURED by Ommar Ortuvia - July 15, 2026 Articles & Photos by Ommar ortuvia Houston, TX — Flashback to 1994: NIN’s “Closer,” Green Day’s “Basket Case,” and Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” are dominating the airwaves. Pulp Fiction and The Mask are killing it at the box office. Seinfeld, Friends, and The Simpsons are making us laugh on TV. The internet is still a newborn in diapers; apartheid gloriously ended in South Africa; and Brazil won their fourth World Cup on US soil. Among these historical markers, another was being forged: in the tiny state of Connecticut, a chubby-cheeked, cherub-faced teenager in a baseball cap named Jamey Jasta forms a band destined to rewrite the rules of metalcore: Hatebreed. For 32 years, these guys have forged a legacy by flawlessly melding together punk, hardcore, and metal. Fast forward to Friday night: Hatebreed rolls into Houston on the “Summer Slaughter Tour 2026,” bringing with them an absolute tour de force as backup: Devourment, Snuffed on Sight, The Last Ten Seconds of Life, Face Yourself, and H-Town’s own Septik. The room is packed with an outstanding mix of old metal veterans and fresh-faced kids, merrily eating up the fast, heavy riffs of the (mostly) deathcore openers. The onslaught began at 9:00 PM with Hatebreed hitting the stage and immediately detonating the room with “I Will Be Heard.” It is easily their biggest, most undeniable anthem. From the 2002 masterpiece Perseverance, this track cemented them as legends 24 years ago, and it still hits like a freight train. Allowing no breathing room they instantly follow it up with “Kill Count Increase,” a brutal new track from their upcoming album dropping this fall. The tempo never faltered as Jasta and company tore through their 30+ year discography, striking a perfect balance between tried-and-true classics and newer hard-hitters. The setlist leaned heavily into their masterpiece eras, highlighting Satisfaction Is the Death of Desire, Perseverance, and The Rise of Brutality. Predictably, the floor erupted into a non-stop frenzy of moshing, thrashing, and crowd-surfing. Between songs, Jasta frequently engaged with the audience. He polled the room to see who were returning veterans versus first-time attendees, and expressed genuine regret for having to skip Houston during last year’s Summer Slaughter tour. To keep the energy cheerful before launching into “Looking Down the Barrel of Today,” Jasta introduced their “Ball of Death” – a massive inflatable ball tossed into the crowd for fans to bounce around, serving as a playful pun on the genre’s infamous “Wall of Death.” They close the main set with another new single, “Make the Demons Obey,” before unleashing a final onslaught of classics: “Empty Promises,” “Proven,” and the finale, “Perseverance.” Bringing the night full circle by ending with the title track of their landmark 2002 album felt incredibly fitting. Hardcore is a brotherhood where all walks of life are welcome, and this diverse crowd proved it. Beneath the aggressive nature of the music, Hatebreed’s lyrics are pure, unadulterated therapy, offering a surprisingly inspiring message about overcoming the immense weights of life. Jasta’s poetry acts as a form of therapy for anyone needing a psychological boost, with lines like: “Perseverance against all opposition, crushing all limitations” “Burn the bridge to the place where your fear lives, make your stand” “Now is the time for me to rise to my feet” “I’ll choose my own! I’ve got to fight for myself” Countless fans credit Hatebreed’s PMA (Positive Mental Attitude) – rather than traditional therapy – for pulling them through their darkest hours. This message, paired with Jasta’s anti-racist and anti-extremist stances, builds a lifelong loyalty among fans who feel genuinely included and protected. And for those who need a daily reminder, Hatebreed motivational posters have long been a favorite meme across the internet. Hatebreed will continue their current tour through November, spanning dates across both the United States and Europe. Make sure to catch them live, and be ready to bounce the Ball of Death.
